Pet Insurance

ABOUT PET INSURANCE

Pet insurance is designed to help protect both your pet and your finances when unexpected illness or injury occurs. Modern veterinary medicine now offers access to advanced diagnostics, surgery, specialist treatments and ongoing medical care that can significantly improve quality of life and outcomes for pets. However, this level of care can also be expensive.

Pet insurance providers offer a range of policies and coverage options to suit different household budgets and needs. Having suitable insurance in place may help reduce the financial stress associated with unexpected veterinary expenses and assist you in making decisions about your pet’s treatment options.

As with any financial product, it is important to carefully compare policies and understand what is and is not covered before choosing a plan.

WHERE TO GET PET INSURANCE

Veterinary practices in Australia are generally not authorised to sell pet insurance products directly. Any information provided by our practice is general in nature only and should not be considered financial advice.

We do not recommend or endorse any particular insurer or policy. You should carefully consider your own financial circumstances and review the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) before purchasing any insurance product.

Below is a sample list of companies currently offering pet insurance in Australia. This list is not exhaustive and there may be other providers available.

As with all insurance products, policy terms, exclusions, waiting periods, benefit limits and claim processes can vary significantly between insurers. We encourage pet owners to undertake their own research and comparisons before making a decision.

PET INSURANCE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

I have pet insurance. Can I claim at the time of treatment?

Unfortunately, most pet insurance companies in Australia do not currently offer a universal instant claiming system similar to HICAPS used in human health care. This means veterinary clinics generally cannot process claims directly with your insurer at the time of payment.

In most cases, you will need to pay your veterinary account first and then submit your claim directly to your insurer for reimbursement. Some insurers may offer online or app-based claiming systems that can help streamline this process.

What does pet insurance cover?

Coverage varies significantly depending on the insurer and level of cover selected. Policies may differ in relation to accident cover, illness cover, routine care options, annual limits, exclusions and waiting periods.

We encourage pet owners to review policy documents carefully and use independent comparison and review services when researching insurance options.

What are some common areas people ask about?

We regularly receive questions about pet insurance policies and coverage. While every insurer and policy is different, some common areas people ask about include:

  • Pre-existing conditions

  • Waiting periods

  • Annual and lifetime claim limits

  • Exclusions and restricted conditions

  • Dental coverage

  • Breed-related exclusions

  • Routine or preventative care options

  • Age limits and premium increases over time

It is important to read your policy documentation carefully and stay informed about any updates or changes made by your insurer to ensure the policy continues to meet your needs.

Will you help me with my insurance claim?

While we cannot submit claims directly on your behalf, we are happy to assist where required by your insurance company.

This commonly involves your veterinarian completing claim documentation provided by your insurer and supplying relevant medical records or patient history when requested.
